Doris Linnea (Leaf) Timm passed away in her home in rural Utica, Minnesota, on Easter Tuesday, April 10, 2012, from complications of Parkinson's disease. She was 79.Doris was born June 17, 1932, in rural Stratford, Iowa to Arthur Henry and Agnes Johanna Marie (Swanson) Leaf. Art farmed along the Boone River near Bell's Mill, producing sorghum, and Marie worked as a schoolteacher. Doris attended country school and graduated from Stratford High School in 1950. She graduated from Buena Vista College in 1953 with honors in chemistry. She taught school in Woodbine, Iowa, while saving up money for nurses' training. She graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing.Doris was married to John Allen Ervin Timm of Utica, Minnesota on June 17, 1961, at First Baptist Church, Rochester, MN. They farmed at Utica for the next 51 years while she continued her nursing career. She spent time as a public health nurse, as well as working at area nursing homes and clinics. She retired from Mayo Clinic in 2001. Doris is survived by her husband John, children Marilyn (David Weissing) of Utica; Arthur (Carolyn) of Fair Oaks, California; Dan (Ellen) of Utica; and George of St. Paul. She has twelve grandchildren, Johanna, Erik, Karl, Friedrich, Ernst, Ursula, Katharina, and Nikolaus Weissing; Philip and Brian Timm; and Becci and Evan Timm.Doris was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Paul, John, and infant Dale; and sister Florence.Doris had a deep love for her family and friends and worked selflessly for the good of others. The family opened up their home to foster children and also welcomed foreign exchange students from several countries, including Colombia, Norway, and Sweden. Doris interrupted her nursing career to shepherd young students at Winona Christian School. Doris's favorite job was as a farm wife and mother. She enjoyed the rhythm of the seasons and loved gardening, harvesting, and "putting food by." She magically prepared meals for groups of any size at a moment's notice. Doris lived a full life, informed and motivated by her faith. She pushed back against the limitations of her illness for more than ten years. Her family is deeply appreciative of the kindness from her caregivers, which allowed her to remain in her home.The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 11:00 AM at Our Savior Moravian Church, Altura, MN with the Reverend David Sobek officiating. The visitation will be Friday, April 13 at Hoff Funeral Home in St. Charles, MN, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and at the church for one hour before the service. Interment will follow at Bethany Moravian Cemetery. Hoff Funeral Home is handling all arrangements.
