Doris Jean Nielsen

Doris Jean Nielsen, 91, of Rochester, died Monday, June 26, 2017 at Cottage Wood Senior Community.


Doris was born April 15, 1926 in Crystal Lake, IA to Gerald and Hazel (McFarland) Volding. She and Ivan Nielsen were married October 3, 1952 in Crystal Lake. They made their home in Crystal Lake for a short time, moving to Albert Lea on March 1, 1956.

Following retirement Doris and Ivan moved to Lakeland, Florida for 10 years. In December of 1997 they moved to St. Charles to be near family. Ivan died June 14, 2003. Doris later moved to Rochester.

While in Albert Lea Doris belonged to Ascension Lutheran Church. Upon moving to St. Charles she and Ivan joined St. Charles United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three children; Linda (Warren) Stowell of Rochester, Don (Jolene) Nielsen of Memphis, TN, Larry (Tammy) Nielsen of St. Charles, a daughter-in-law Brenda Nielsen of Mapleton, eight grandchildren; Melissa (Thomas) Tanner, Lee (Lynette) Stowell, Tom (Shelly) Stowell, Erin (Henderson) Harris, Maren (Bobbi) Tillman, Kelsey and Ella Thompson, Erik and Alex Nielsen, 12 great-grandchildren; Lindsey, Ashley, Zachary, and Caleb Stowell, Caroline, Gustav and Claudia Tanner, Benjamin and Gabriella Stowell, Ella, Kendyl, and Layne Harris, Stella and Sloane Tillman; great-great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Abigail Kotten; sister, Betty Meyer of Rochester; brothers, Merle, Gary, and Denny Volding. In addition to Ivan's death, Doris was preceded by her son Allan in 2016.


Services to remember Doris will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1st at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in St. Charles with the Reverend Heather E. Klason officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Doris will be buried next to Ivan at Graceland Cemetery in Albert Lea.
