HOUSTON, MINN. David Russell (Buckwheat) Gaustad, 54, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005 suddenly of a massive heart attack at his home in San Diego, CA. He was born August 14, 1950 to Russell and Artis (Peterson) Gaustad at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. David grew up in Houston, MN and graduated from Houston High School in 1968. He attended Winona Technical School and graduated in Auto Body Repair. He later attended Winona State University with a Major in Business. David worked for sixteen years for Dunn Blacktop Company in Winona. He was a member of the 49ers Union. In 1973, he married Jean Molling of Caledonia, MN and eight years later they divorced. He also worked as a bartender at Valley High Country Club, Houston; and the Houston American Legion. Buckwheat was very involved in the Houston Jaycees. He enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing, golfing and playing cards. Buckwheat was known for his sense of humor and always had a joke or a funny story to tell. In 1984, he moved to San Diego, CA where he worked as a bartender and for a moving and storage company. Most recently, he managed a bar in San Diego. Buckwheat will be truly missed by his family and many friends. David is survived by his mother Artis, Houston, a brother Richard (Dick), Houston, four sisters; Evie (Gary) Bartsch, Houston, Ginnie (Tom) Weichert, Houston, Mary Gaustad, Houston, Kathy (Mark) Patterson, Winona, MN.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. David was preceded in death by his father Russell, his grandparents, Aunt Nancy Mindrum and Uncle Lloyd Gaustad. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2005 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston. A visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. at Hoff Funeral Homes ? Houston Chapel on Friday, May 20, and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Stone Church Cemetery.
