David Nelson

David Gust Nelson , passed away on September 17, 2024, at the age of 89. His journey began in Duluth on April 15, 1935, as the son of Fritz and Bernice Nelson. At 16, he left for St. Charles, where he completed his education at St. Charles High School, engaging in FFA activities and horse showing along the way.

After a brief stint in the US Air Force, David settled down with his high school sweetheart, Marleen Loppnow, tying the knot on October 22, 1953, at the Berea Moravian Church in St. Charles. Through the years, their love story blossomed into a beautiful family, with five children to raise in their hometown.

During his career at IBM, where he diligently served as a salary analyst until his retirement in 1991, David was not only a devoted husband and father but an active member of various community organizations. He helped at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in St. Charles with their financial bookkeeping. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club and the Minnesota Mule Club. One of his favorite past times was taking his mules on trail rides and enjoying the time on his motorcycle. His passion for woodworking materialized into creating exquisite furniture pieces for loved ones, showcasing his talent and generosity.

Memories of camping adventures in the motorhome and shared hobbies with his kids and grandkids will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew David. From cheering on Minnesota sports teams to exploring the great outdoors, he cherished every moment spent with family.

David is survived by his children, Deb Johnson, Pete (Peggy) Nelson, Tom (Cheryl) Nelson, Mike (Barb) Nelson, Terra Lidbom; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; siblings, Yvonne Pavlich, Marlyn Lundeen; and brother-in-law, Dave Harrison.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marleen; siblings, Shirley, Pat, and Carolyn.

Memorial service for David will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 3pm at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service- St. Charles, MN. Visitation will be from 1pm to 3pm. Private family burial will take place at Berea Moravian Cemetery in St. Charles, MN. Rev. Jodi Heim will officiate the service.
