SPRING GROVE, MINN. - Darrell R. Barth, 77, of Spring Grove died Thursday, September 28, at his home. Darrell was born on March 21, 1929, to Walter and Wilma (Darrington) Barth in Hesper, Iowa. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church at Locust, Iowa, and confirmed at the Evangelical Church in Burr Oak, Iowa. Darrell was a graduate of Mabel High School. He married Shirley Larson of Spring Grove, Minn. on August 14, 1948. Shirley passed away on September 20, 1979. Darrell was a farmer all of his life, he married Maxine Hagen at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston on September 9, 1989. The couple lived in Houston. Due to health problems Darrell retired from farming in 1991. He liked to travel and they took a trip every year for the next ten years all over the U.S. He loved gardening, dancing to old time music, playing cards, and overnight trips to casinos. On October 4, 2004, they moved to the Spring Grove Manor, where he enjoyed playing whist with his friends. Darrell is survived by his wife: Maxine; two sons: Steve (Marlene) Barth of Tomah, Wis., and Dennis Barth of Mabel, Minn.; one daughter: Debra (Kent) Fabian of Winona, Minn.; five grandchildren: Benjamin, Andrew, and Kevin Barth, Todd Otterness, and Jennifer Dowling; one great-granddaughter: Grace Dowling; three sisters: Marleen Ward of Mabel, Minn., Alice Reedquist of Casper, Wyoming, and Susie Vogeler of Columbus Junction, Iowa; two brothers: Neal Barth of Waukon, Iowa, and Merlin Barth of Rathdrum, Iowa; four step-children, nine step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Shirley, and grandsons, Sonny and Justin Otterness. The funeral service for Darrell will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 2, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church cemetery, Houston. Friends may call from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the Church.
