St. Charles, Dale Jay Hawk, M.D. 90 of Leesburg, FL and St. Charles, MN, passed away May 24, 2011 at his home in Leesburg. Dale was born April 9, 1921 in New Philadelphia, OH to Ora J. and Ida C. (Emig) Hawk. He graduated from Strasburg High School in Strasburg, OH. Dale served in the United States Marines during WWII. On December 17, 1943 he and Vivian Lentz were married at Central Methodist Church, Washington, DC. He graduated from Kent State University in Kent, OH with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1951 Dale graduated from Hahnemann University Medical School in Philadelphia and interned in Atlantic City, NJ. Dale and Vivian lived in Chardon, OH for five years, moving to St. Charles in 1957, where he practiced medicine until retiring in 1989. Dr. Hawk served on staff for Mayo Medical School from its inception until retiring. More than 20 medical students have interned with him. He was a member of numerous local and national medical associations. Dale was a driving force behind the establishment of Whitewater Manor Nursing Home and served as staff physician from its opening until he retired.He was a member of St. Charles United Methodist Church. He was also an active member of the Masonic Lodge, serving several terms as Grand Master while attaining 32nd Degree and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Dale was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and took part in many fishing trips into the wilds of northern Minnesota and Canada. He was instrumental in starting the St. Charles Explorer Scouts troop and led several expeditions with them into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Ontario's Quetico Wilderness Area - once logging over 200 miles on a ten-day trip.Dale was an avid golfer and an active member of the St. Charles and Pennbrooke Fairways Golf Clubs. In fact, he played 18 holes on his 90th birthday with his sons and his lifelong golf partner, Vivian. Dale is survived by his wife Vivian; two sons Elliott (Gail) Hawk of Eagan, MN and Dr. Steve (Lois) Hawk of Leesburg, FL and daughter-in-law, Sherrie Hawk; six grandchildren: Emily Lynn and Austin Charles Hawk, Katherine Elizabeth Valch-Koufski and Christopher Richard Jones (step-grandson), Stephanie Elizabeth and Steven Eric Hawk; three great-grandchildren: Melissa Seegers, Niko Brandon and Jessica Emma Valch-Koufski; brothers: Gene Hawk, DDS of Strasburg, OH, John Hawk, DDS of Strasburg, OH and William Hawk of Canton, OH; sisters: Vivian Barr of Dover, OH, Edna Richardson of Richville, OH and Alice Williams of Detroit. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles D. Hawk, DDS and his brothers Bray Hawk, M.D. and Melvin Hawk, Esq.. Services for Dale will begin at 2PM Thursday, June 30th at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in St. Charles. A Masonic Service will be offered at 2PM with Dale's funeral service at 2:15PM, with the Reverend Stephen McGinley officiating. A reception will follow at the funeral home with burial of Dale's cremated body at 5PM in Hillside Cemetery. The St. Charles American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War groups will conduct military honors following services at the funeral home.
