St. Charles Clayton G. Taylor, 95, or St. Charles died Saturday, December 12, 2009 in his apartment at St. Charles Assisted Living. Clayton was born September 26, 1914 in St. Charles to Glenn and Ella (Matschke) Taylor. He was raised in rural St. Charles (Quincy Township) and attended school in St. Charles. Clayton married Doris Prudoehl on June 6, 1939. The couple farmed for twenty years near Bethany before moving to the Mankato area for 20 years. They later moved to Winona where they lived for 17 years until moving to St. Charles. In addition to farming Clayton worked for the state highway department, Speltz Farm Equipment and Kato Engineering. Clayton was known by friends and neighbors as 'the walker', with his many trips to the St. Charles Park with his diamond willow canes and his hand carved 400 feet of wooden chains and fans. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris on February 1, 2006 and by his three brothers. Survivors include his three children; Kermit Taylor of San Diego, CA, Lois (Bill) Schwieters of Sun City, CA and Carolyn (Dennis) Verthein of Altura, three grandchildren; Brad (Heather) Verthein and their children Lauren and Nathan, Brenda (Jon) Parsons and their daughter, Nora Taylor Parsons; and Jay (Amanda) Verthein, three sisters; Vivian Grover of Rapid City, SD, Helen Beahrs of Rochester and Jean Vesley of Rapid City, SD. Funeral Services will be 11AM Friday, December 18th at Our Saviors Moravian Church in Altura with the Reverend David Sobek officiating. Burial will follow in Bethany Moravian Cemetery. Friends may call at Our Saviors Moravian Church on Thursday from 5-7 PM and one hour before services on Friday.
