Bruce Edward Johnstone

WINONABruce Edward Johnstone, 84 of Winona, died Monday, April 14, 2014 at Winona Health.Bruce was born March 18, 1930 in Winona to William Francis and Charlotte Hertha (Harnish) Johnstone. He attended Winona Senior High School and served in the United States Air Force from 1947-1950. Bruce married Katherine Besup on May 19, 1953, in Winona. Following in the footsteps of his father, Bruce was a proud member of the Winona Fire Department for over 25 years; retiring with the rank of Fire Marshall. He also spent many evenings in Winona, Houston, and Fillmore Counties teaching classes to volunteer firefighters through Southeast Technical College. He later moved to Fond du Lac, WI, where he taught Fire Science at Moraine Park Technical Institute. After retirement, he stayed active in Walleyes for Tomorrow and the Muskie Club. Bruce returned to Winona in 2003 and has been a resident of Callista Court for the last eight years, where he was the proud Director of Happy Hour. Bruce is survived by his children: Christianne (William) Keiper of Winona, Scott (Kay) Johnstone of Winona, and April (Larry) Leibovich of Rochester; grandchildren, Tristan (Cicely Robinson) Keiper, Moriah Keiper, Travis (Sarah Vesterso) Johnstone, Tyler Johnstone, Kyle Johnstone, Kyle Johnstone, Danielle (Matt) Kenitz, and Luke (fiancée Allison Berquist) Leibovich; great-grandsons, Henry and Max Johnstone; sister, Ruthe Kowalsky; brother-in-law, Robert Applen, one niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Katherine Johnstone, in 1973; sister, Norma Applen; and brother-in-law, Joseph Kowalsky.Memorial service will be held at 4pm on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Hoff Celebration of Life Center in Goodview, led by Pastor Vern Kettner. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
