Betty Virginia Pagel, 86, of the St. Charles died Thursday, June 29th at Seasons Hospice House in Rochester. Betty was born October 2, 1930 in Whitewater Valley to Edward and Emma (Prawatchke) Harmon and grew up on a farm in Whitewater Valley. Betty married Robert Pagel on October 20, 1949 in St. Charles and they farmed with Robert's brother Bill until moving to their own farm near Utica. Robert died October 3, 1970. Following Roberts' death Betty continued to farm as well as raising their seven children. She later worked at the St. Charles Greenhouse and as a cook at Whitewater Care Center. In 2001 Betty suffered a stroke and has lived adult foster homes since. Betty enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and taking them fishing in the stream on the farm. She was an excellent cook, especially making homemade egg noodles, bread and pop-overs. She enjoyed sharing the wealth of her garden, as well as garage sales, followed by going for coffee.
She is survived by her seven children, Charlotte (William ) Litchy of Trempealeau, WI; Dean (Janet) Pagel of St. Charles; Richard (Susan) Pagel of Utica; Keith (Vicky) Pagel of Eyota; Nancy Pagel of Rochester; Susan (Dale) Bedtka of Dover and Gary (Denise) Pagel of Chatfield, 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren with another arriving soon, siblings' Ivan Harmon of Rochester and Vera Shones of Lake City, sister-in-law Alice Abbott of Marshfield, WI a brother-in-law, Otto Brueske of Rochester. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by siblings Art, Margaret, Beatrice and a baby brother.
Services to remember Betty will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Hoff Funeral Service in St. Charles with the Reverend Heather E. Klason officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
