Betty Delores Smith, 89, of Lewiston, died Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.Betty, the older of two children, was born in Utica on November 23, 1922 to Otto and Elsie (Schmidt) Schafer. She was raised in the Dover area and graduated from Dover High School. After graduation, Betty attended Teaching College in St. Charles. On June 10, 1942, Betty was united in marriage to Clifford Smith in Rochester. Betty and Cliff farmed near Fremont until their retirement when they moved to Lewiston. Betty also worked off the farm at the Turkey Plant in Altura and at Badger Construction until her retirement in 1985. Betty was a long time member at St. Paul's UCC/ELCA, where she was active in the Women's Guild. In her spare time, Betty enjoyed crocheting, reading, quilting, traveling, and spending time with family. Her smile could light up a room, and she will be missed by many.Betty is survived by her sons, Clark (Carol) of Park Rapids, Dale (Sharon) of Utica, and Stan (Vickie) of Lewiston; daughters, Lonnie (Rick) Peterson of Thief River Falls and Renae (Brian Moore) Reed of Stockton; 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; and brother, Leslie "Sonny" Schafer of Lewiston. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband of over 51 years, Clifford, who died in 1994.Visitation will be held from 3-6pm on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service in Lewiston and also one hour prior to the service at church on Monday. Funeral service will be at 1:30pm on Monday, October 22 at St. Paul's UCC/ELCA in Lewiston with the Reverend Louise Stromberg officiating.
