HOUSTONBernice Irene Forsyth, a lifelong resident of Houston, died peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 14, 2013 at Valley View Healthcare & Rehab in Houston at the age of 91.Born on November 17, 1921 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Bernice was the oldest daughter of James and Pearly (Ullan) Corey. She was raised outside of Money Creek and graduated from Houston High School in 1940, the first class in the new high school. A few months after graduating, she eloped to Missouri with Herman Forsyth on August 31, 1940. They moved back to the family farm in Perkins Valley between Houston and Money Creek. Bernice and Herman were lifelong members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, later Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston. She was active in the ladies aid and its circles. Bernice was also a hardworking farm wife. She helped with chores and field work, raised dairy cattle and fed the calves, gardened, and in her later years, picked eggs from over 3,000 laying hens. After retiring in 1974, moved into Houston. Herman died on January 2, 1999. Bernice enjoyed playing bridge in a ladies card club. In her spare time, Bernice enjoyed knitting, watching NASCAR, and spending time with her family. In 2003, Bernice moved to Valley View Manor, where she lived for over 10 years. For the last year and a half, she had been residing at Valley View Healthcare & Rehab. Bernice is survived by her children, Virginia (Thomas) Johnson of Houston and Bryan (Diane) Forsyth of rural Houston; grandchildren, Jana (John) Beckman and Marc Johnson; great-grandchildren, Tanner Johnson, Trisha Johnson, and Janell Beckman; sisters, Betty Thorson, Illa Sweet, and Glenis Loken; sister-in-law, Patty Ann Forsyth; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of over 58 years, Herman; grandson, Van Johnson; sister, Janet (Cliff) Johnston; and brothers-in-law, Ole Thorson, Lyle Sweet, and James Loken.Memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with visitation one hour prior. Reverend Lane Zaffke will officiate.
