Bernice A. Grindland, 89, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, at St. Anne Extended Health Care of Winona after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on August 12, 1923, in Winona, MN, to Joseph and Anna (Kistowski) Langowski. Bernice attended school in Winona and excelled in music. She played saxophone in the Winona Municipal Band and was offered a seat with the Minnesota Municipal Band in St. Paul. She was also proficient with piano, steel guitar, and accordion. She married William (Bill) Grindland on July 16, 1946, and they lived most of their lives in the Rushford area. Bernice and Bill both had a love of music and enjoyed sharing their talents with others. They formed a band and performed at various supper clubs within the immediate area. They also enjoyed going to area nursing homes entertaining the residents and involving them in sing-alongs. They did several benefit shows in the area to help people in need. Bernice worked for many years in the office at Winona Glove Company and learned accounting and computer skills. She enjoyed her job and was able to meet many interesting people. Bernice was a member of Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, MN. Bernice lost her husband, Bill, in 1986, and is survived by her 3 children, Carolyn, (Dennis) Rasmussen of Winona, MN, William (Cindy) Grindland of Peterson, MN, and Susan (Kevin) Kahoun of Rushford, MN. She has 8 grandchildren, Steve (Connie) Rasmussen, Melissa (Chris) Thompson, Jared (Stacy) Rasmussen, Joshua (Tanya) Rasmussen, Chris (Kristi) Grindland, Stacey (Albert) Molinar, Natalie (Shaun) Glosson, and Jason (Laura) Kahoun and has 20 great-grandchildren. Bernice is also survived by a brother, Richard (Phyllis) Langowski of California and sisters-in-law, Minerva Milde and Irene Stopyro of Rochester, MN and brother-in-law, Art (Bernice) Grindland of Winona, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents, and a sister, Felicia Wolfe. Bernice was a vibrant person who was passionate about her family and her music. She has left a legacy of encouragement to pursue your dreams and being the best you can be. Until Alzheimer's took over her life, she was learned and knowledgeable on a matter of subjects and enjoyed doing things with family and friends. Mom, we will miss you deeply and we will miss your unique humor. You made the world a better place and we know that you are now in heaven singing with the angels.Visitation for Bernice and her family will be held at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service - Hansen Goodview Chapel on Wednesday, November 14th, from 4-6pm, where there will be a funeral service held at 6:00pm officiated by the Reverend Kay Wold. A reception will immediately follow the service at the funeral home on Wednesday. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Highland Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.
