Bernard A. Loftus

Dover, Bernard A. Loftus, 92, of Dover died Monday morning March 27th at St. Isodore Care Center in Plainview. Bernard was born November 29, 1913 in McIntyre, Iowa to Walter and Eva (Montague) Loftus. He and Leora Mueller were married September 16, 1941 in Elba. They farmed near Elgin and Elba for a short time before moving to Fremont in 1943. In 1957 the couple moved to Quincy Township near Dover where they have farmed since. Bernard was a noted dairy herdsman and received several awards from AMPI. He was also an avid soil conservationist; planting trees, installing terraces and ponds. Bernard was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota, Knights of Columbus and had served as an officer for the Quincy Township board for many years. In his retirement Bernard enjoyed gardening and working with wood. Survivors include his wife Leora, 12 children; Leo (Bev) Loftus of Rochester, Chuck (Bonnie) Loftus of Stewartville, Mary (Jim) Cole of Rochester, Lucille (Paul) Vermeersch of Rochester, Jerry (Carol) Loftus of Dover, Kathy (Bruce) Atkinson of Rochester, Dorothy (Jim) Nall of Greeley, CO, Joe (Wendy) Loftus of Eyota, Gene (Deb) Loftus of Dover, Elaine (Jim) Nigon of Greenwood, WI, Elizabeth (Dan) Pulford of Rochester and Tom Loftus of Hopkins, 40 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, five brothers, Vincent of Greeley, CO, Jim of Waterloo, IA, Bill of Waseca, Chuck of Galt, CA and Jack of Lodi, CA, and a sister Ada Hildebrand of Oxnard, CA. He was preceded in death by a son James, a granddaughter Theresa and seven brothers. A Funeral Mass will be at 11AM Thursday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota with the Rev. Dan Dernek officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Eyota. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Home's - St. Charles Chapel. Fiends may also call one hour before services at the church on Thursday. A Rosary will be recited at 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
