Arthur Michael Noeske, 71 of Winona, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at his home.
Art was the oldest of four children, born to Malven and Audre (Styba) Noeske at Winona Hospital. He attended Holy Trinity Grade School and High School, graduating from Winona Senior High in 1966. Art had a strong work ethic, starting at an early age working on area farms near Rollingstone and Madison Silo for 10 years. He joined the Navy at age 17, following in his father's footsteps. Art continued his Navy career until 1991, retiring as Chief Petty Officer. He enjoyed his Navy career which took him all over the world, making a lot of friends along the way and some continued to be his best friends to both himself and his wife as Navy couples.
On June 6, 1970, Art was joined in marriage to Darlene Wampach at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Altura. The union of the couple was complete with the birth of two sons in 1972 and 1980. Art's working career started as a union carpenter. He held a position of secretary and treasurer for Carpenter's Local 307 of Winona in the 1970's. In 1972, he built his home in Pleasant Valley for his new family and raised his sons working on farming and raising Polled Hereford cattle and some pigs. Art enjoyed the land, his cattle, John Deere tractors, Arabian horses and his ever-present Australian Shepherd dogs by his side.
He served as a volunteer fireman for Ridgeway Fire Dept until 1980 when Wilson Township built a fire hall and community center. Art was chosen as the first fire chief and he along with a group of Navy personnel, trained a crew of 40 volunteer fire fighters. Art's life included many careers besides military reserves, volunteer fireman and carpenter. He also sold Moorman Feed for 10 years and was employed at Winona State as a general maintenance worker for 17 years until his retirement due to health and disability. Art was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and its early Land Stewardship Program, a member of the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 and a member of the Tri-State Ostomy Support Group.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jackie Henke; brother, Toby Noeske; sister-in-law, Diane Noeske; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Dale Krieger; brother-in-law, Earl Wampach and niece Andrea Alexander; father and mother-in-law, Paul and Pearl Wampach.
