Arthur Clifford Grindland, in his 95th year, gently passed away in his sleep during the early morning hours on April 20, 2019. His passing was just 16 days after the death of the love of his life and spouse of 72 years, Bernice. The painful separation of this couple by the divide of death found both relief and remedy in Art's passing.
Art was born in Fillmore County on December 21, 1923, to Willie and Elvira Emma (Uden) Grindland. Art and Bernice united in matrimony August 9, 1946. The birth of their four children followed quickly thereafter.
Leaving his farm background behind, Art entered the tool and die trade, working for decades at Winona Van Norman. Eventual retirement allowed Art and Bernice to winter in Texas and travel extensively. Art had an incredibly inquisitive mind and could cite historical events in laser-like detail, and not only that, he cut a fine figure on the dance floor as well.
He was a man guided by strong principle and an abiding faith and gave back to his community by years of service to the Boy Scouts as well as to the faith community by teaching Sunday School, serving on the church council, and years of service to the church community.
He is survived by his children, John (Rebecca) Grindland, Hastings, Minn., Judith (Stephen) Boeser, Elko, Minn., Thomas (Cheryl) Grindland, Savage, Minn., and Rebecca (Denny) McGann, Winona, Minn.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and sister, Irene Stopyro, Rochester, Minn. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; his parents, Willie and Elvira; brother William; and sisters, Eleanor Dahle, Minerva Milde, and Edel Brand.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, April 29, at Central Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Short and the Rev. Wade Davick officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Central Lutheran Church or Lutheran World Relief. Interment at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, Peterson, Minn., will be at a later date. Please leave a memory of Art at
