Arleen Louise Barkeim

Arleen Louise Barkeim, 89, formerly of Lewiston, died peacefully January 27, 2018 at Lake Winona Manor.

Arleen was born March 18, 1928 in Jackson County, Minnesota to Arthur and Anna (Jacobson) Barkeim.
As a teenager Arleen moved with her parents and brother to a farm near Lewiston. She graduated from Lewiston High School and began her career as a secretary in the Winona County Extension Office in Lewiston. She attended the University of Minnesota, working as a 4-H assistant in Winona County during the summers. Arleen graduated from the University with a degree in Home Economics Education. For three years she was the Extension Home Economist in Goodhue County. Most of her career was spent in St. Paul beginning with serving as assistant State 4-H Leader for southeastern Minnesota. Arleen received her master's degree in Extension Education from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado. She was a full professor at the University of Minnesota. In 1972 Arleen was named District Extension Director for northwestern Minnesota. She was the first woman named to this position, a post she held until retirement in 1981. After retirement she lived in Pillager, Minnesota, and in Pharr, Texas, before moving to Winona.

Many friends and family were blessed to received gifts of Arleen's sewing and beautiful needlework. She loved all animals. Each pet dog was dear to her, especially Pepper.

She leaves her sister-in-law, Doris Barkeim; 4 nephews, Rollin (Debra) Barkeim, Trempealeau, WI, Brian (Barbara) Barkeim, Lewiston, MN, Bruce (Deborah) Barkeim, Lewiston, MN, Darrell Barkeim, Milwaukee, WI; 2 nieces, Karen (John) Warmuth, Hartford, WI, Lori (Steven) Hungerholt, Rushford, MN, 17 great nephews and nieces and 32 great-great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, brother Lowell Barkeim, and special friend Bill Dorsey.

Thank you to Brookdale Winona, Adith Miller Manor, Lake Winona Manor, and Winona Health Hospice for the kind care given to Arleen in the past few months.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
