Anthony Charles Thesing was born December 24, 1929 in La Crosse, WI to Liola (Lila) Mary McCabe and Anton Joseph Thesing of Nodine, MN. At age six, Tony's family moved to Cloverlawn Farm south of Lewiston where he grew up, attended school, and eventually raised his own family while farming for more than 40 years.
On April 21, 1952, Tony enlisted in the U.S. Airforce to serve our country during the Korean War. While home on Christmas leave from New Castle AFB in Wilmington, Delaware, Tony married the love of his life, Doris Koscianski from Winona on December 26, 1953. For the next 63 years, Tony and Doris celebrated Tony's birthday, Christmas and their wedding anniversary all in three days!
After Tony's military service, the happy couple returned to Minnesota to start their family and work the home farm. Apart from the everyday family and farm adventures and obligations, Tony found time for friends, faith and fraternity. As an advocate for farmers, Tony was honored to serve on the Production Credit Association Board of Directors becoming lifelong friends with many of its members. Tony was a member of the American Legion. He served on the Parish Council at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston and belonged to the Holy Name Society, the Legion of Mary, and the Knights of Columbus.
Tony loved to travel, dance, read, garden, play 500 and Farkle. He and Doris loved nothing better than packing their suitcases, hopping on a cruise ship and escaping cold Minnesota winters to explore the world. He and Doris filled their home with faith, family, food, and fun. Every 4th of July was a family reunion and wasn't complete without a game of baseball in the front yard.
Tony retired from farming in 1996 and became a "computer whiz" before settling into his new career as grandpa extraordinaire. In 2011, after driving back and forth from the farm for more than six years, he and Doris made a permanent move to Stacy, creating their new home with their youngest daughter and her family. In his new role as live-in grandpa he began changing diapers, caring for grandchildren, helping with homework and attending after school activities. Tony used his spare time helping his family with many building, remodeling and refinishing projects that will continue to live on as part of his legacy.
He loved unconditionally, welcomed all who were sent his way and loved his wife and ever growing family with his entire heart. He gave thanks every morning, counted his blessings every night, and by his example shared God's love and mercy with us every day.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents Lila and Anton Thesing, brothers Gerald, James, Dale, Edward and Paul.
He is survived by Doris, his loving wife of 63 years; his children Ann Thesing of St. Paul, David (Kathy) Thesing of Coon Rapids, Mark (Cindy) Thesing of Lewiston, Jay (Patrice) Thesing of Cannon Falls, Nancy (Mike) Gleason of Spring, TX, Amy (Patrick) Rewey of Stacy, and Glen (Lori) Thesing of Altura, and family friend Joann Hawk; his grandchildren Erycka, Elizabeth, Tony (Christa), Megan, Eleacia, Ryan, Aaron (Katie), Andrew, Adam, and Noah Thesing, Heather (Travis) Weaver, Jacob, Rachel and Zachary Gleason, Andrew, Sarah, John and Emily Rewey, and Cole Volkman; his great grandchildren Carter, James and Peter Thesing; his siblings Betty (Cliff) Blaha, Gene (Judy) Thesing, Chuck (Janis) Thesing, Bernie (Susie) Thesing and many nieces and nephews.
