UTICA, Minn. - Allan John "Bud" King, 88, of Utica, Minn. died on Friday, August 14, 2009, at the Golden Living Care Center in St. Charles, Minn. Bud was born on May 15, 1921, in Winona, Minn. to Robert and Mildred (Midler) King. He grew up in Utica and graduated from Dunwoody Institute for Linotype. Bud worked as a printer in Clarissa, Minn. where he met his bride. He married Phyllis Nelson on May 20, 1943. Bud served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an Infantry Captain in France. Following the war he returned to Utica to work at Midler Lumber and eventually owned what became King Lumber. Bud retired in 1983, when he moved to Pequot Lakes, Minn. Following Phyllis' death in 2004, Bud moved to St. Charles, and in 2008, to St. Charles Assisted Living. Bud was a member of the Utica Presbyterian Church, Utica City Council for 20 years, St. Charles American Legion and V.F.W., Rising Sun Masonic Lodge, and Minnesota Lumbermen's Assoc. In his free time he enjoyed fishing. Bud is survived by two sons: Allan John (Patricia) King, Jr. of Rochester, Minn., and Bruce Nelson King of St. Charles.; one daughter, Cheryl (Warren) Baker of Vista, Cal.; five grandchildren: Allan King III, Sara King, Justin King, Danica King, and Bryce Baker; and by two sisters: Kathryn Edwards of St. Charles, and Marion Bergstrom of Marinette, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers: Russell, Robert, and Donald. There will be a memorial service for Bud at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 21, at the Utica Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tim Gerarden officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Utica. Visitation will be from 5:00 TO 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, at Hoff Funeral Homes - St. Charles Chapel, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Utica Presbyterian Church or to the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial Honor Flight.
