Alice M. Whalen, 85, of Winona, died Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.Alice was born July 4, 1925 in Winona to Frank and Esther (Schell) Speltz. She was a graduate of St Theresa's College and worked as a laboratory technician following her graduation where she met her future husband. She married Joseph Whalen in 1954 at Holy Trinity Church in Rollingstone, MN and moved to Indiana. Alice and her daughter, Ann moved to Winona in 2003 from Midland MI following the death of her husband Joe to be near family and friends. She lived at Calista Court before moving to St Anne Extended Care Facility. Alice enjoyed meeting new people, cooking, gardening, and visiting with friends and relatives. She was a positive presence in activities especially the bible study group and culinary club at Saint Anne where she tried to help the kitchen staff prepare the perfect beef briskit. Staff, young and old at St. Anne felt her loving, accepting personality. She often visited with other residents who were sick and kept vigil at their bedside. She is survived by her son, Joseph "Jay" Whalen Jr. of Fort Dodge, IA; granddaughter, Joey Beth Whalen, also of Fort Dodge; brother, Jack (Maxine) Speltz of Winona; sister, Pauline Metzinger of Livermore CA; sister-in-law, Shirley Speltz of Winona; and many nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Ann; and brother, Francis.A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, February 5 at the Chapel of Our Lady at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare with the Reverend Robert Stamschror officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will take place in the spring at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Rollingstone.
