Adeline Mauer

May 7, 1929 — July 25, 2019

Adeline Inez Mauer was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. A faithful person, there wasn't anything that Adeline wouldn't do for someone in need. She lived her life fully and treasured her close relationships with her family. Nurturing and Christ-centered, she leaves behind many wonderful memories for her loved ones to cherish forever.

Reflecting on the 1920s, it was a period of time with a distinctive cultural edge aptly giving the decade the name of the Roaring Twenties. By 1929, the industry was booming until the market crashed that fateful October. Harry and Helen (Smith) Rhodey welcomed home their newborn daughter, Adeline Inez, on May 7th in Eyota, Minnesota. They later moved to Plainview. Adeline's life began during a tumultuous time in our nation's history.

Adeline lived a full and happy childhood. Her father was a foreman with the railroad and her mother was a wonderful homemaker. From an early age, she learned her way around a kitchen and was known to pitch in with the daily household chores. By the time she was a young teen, she was already perfecting recipes, a trait that lasted well into her adult years where she was known to prepare wild game from memory. Adeline always held a special place in her heart for the outdoors. She loved to fish and savored any amount of time near water. Many of the skills she learned during these years prepared her well for her future.

During the time she worked as telephone operator she met Bob Mauer, the man who would change the course of her life forever, at a local 3.2 bar which were very popular at the time. Their easy-going personalities and love of the outdoors made them a perfect match! Eager to share the rest of their lives together, they joined in marriage in 1948 and made their home in Elba. Together they raised eight wonderful children. They instilled in their children the values of hard work and ensured that they were raised in the Catholic faith. Adeline managed the household and supported Bob's family business, the Mauer Brothers Tavern. Her children never doubted the love she held for them as her family meant everything to her. She and Bob modeled a beautiful seventy-year marriage where they were known to settle their differences over a beer! They shared many special memories as a family which contributed to the close bond they held over the years.

In addition to the time she spent with her family, Adeline had many special interests. She shared her excellent cooking skills helping with the Whitewater Sportsmen Club's coon feed each year. Her family treasured her delicious homemade dishes especially her creamed chicken, her turkey and dressing as well as her potato salad. Many times she prepared full meals without following any instructions or recipes and had a real knack for preparing venison heart and tongue in a way that even a hesitant guest was willing to try! Not many people knew of her collection of angels, but no one was ever uncertain about her favorite Minnesota team as she was a proud lifelong Vikings fan! She even cried when they lost the NFC Championship in 1998. Adeline often boasted about the probability that she was the longest-running fan of the daily soap opera, Days of our Lives! Like many others, she also loved to catch the mid-morning Price is Right show. Yet each and every day her very favorite time was at 4:30 p.m. when she was sure to crack open a beer and enjoy happy hour!

Bob and Adeline enjoyed traveling together and especially enjoyed their trip to Luxembourg! There were sure to enjoy the good food as well as the full-bodied beers served throughout the small countryside. Adeline also enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Whitewater Valley, but the highlight of her last twenty-two years were the summers they both spent fishing and enjoying their lake cabin near Birchwood, Wisconsin. When it came to relaxing, she enjoyed working on her stained glass pieces or picking up a good book. She was an avid reader for many years. In her later years, she treasured the time she spent at the local casino playing the slot machines with her daughters or going to Bingo. Selfless and loving, Adeline will forever be remembered for her genuine acceptance of all people and living her life to the fullest. May her many special friends and loved ones honor her memory by reflecting on the fact that often the most important things in life aren't actually things, but the time you spend with the ones you love.
